North Coal Lake | Alberta Paddle
Coal Lake Alberta is a beautiful lake to visit with the family for fishing, boating, paddling or hiking and is located approximately 60 km south of Edmonton Alberta. There are private homes and property that line certain areas of the lake but all the homes are mostly hidden. South Coal lake has a boat launch and campground that we have never visited before.
Coal Lake is 11km Long with a max depth of 18ft. The main inflow and outflow of Coal Lake is the Pipestone Creek. The lake has two boat launches, one at the North end off Hwy 616 in Leduc County and the other on the South end off Hwy 13 with a small campground in Wetaskiwin County.
The lake CAN BE ROUGH TO PADDLE ON AND THERE IS NO WHERE TO HIDE FROM THE WIND however we find mornings on the lake is calm and a beautiful place to paddle with the family in our Clipper Cascade Canoe.
We saw lot's of waterfowl from ducks, geese, pelicans and many more. If your lucky you may even see deer or moose along the lakeside. We mentioned we loved this lake in the early mornings because it is so peaceful and the powerboats don't usually come out until later in the day. So if you enjoy the wildlife a early morning paddle is for you or maybe even a sunset paddle would be just as nice. Lot's of trees and greenery along the lakeside!
FACT: Coal Lake was names by J.D.A Fitzpatrick in 1892 for the coal beds located in many areas along the northeast shore.
