Beneficial HERBS for your Chickens

Herbs whether fresh or dried can have many benefits for your flock. You can purchase herbs from your local Supermarket they will have several dried varieties but in smaller packages. They will also carry fresh herbs but depending on where you live it can be hard to get a good selection most of the  year. Also lets not even discuss the price of fresh herbs here in Canada during the winter months. During the spring and summer months you can visit a local greenhouse for select herbs growing in pots if you want to grow your own herbs. Some herbs are even perennials so check your growing zone. You can even grab a bag of dirt and seeds and try out that green thumb. Local farmstock stores will also carry bags of dried herbs for chickens however again can get pricy so we prefer to grow our own. These are just some herbs we give our chickens that we grow.

Fennel, Nasturtiums, Parsley, Nettle- Egg Stimulant

Mint, Lavender, Calendula - Smells great and repels insects

Basil - Antibacterial

Thyme, Dill - Respiratory Health

Oregano "Super Herb"- Immune Booster, Natural Antibiotic

There are several other natural remedies or herbs you can also feed your chickens, these are just a few we offer and grow on our property. We also only offer in moderation. We place fresh herbs in the dust bath and also hang or spread around coop in winter to freshen  up. We have also dehydrated Herbs and spread in the nesting boxes; the hens love to pick at the herbs while laying their eggs. We have used dried herbs blended into the layer feed. DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR FAMILY!
