Hard Luck Canyon | Whitecourt

Hard Luck Canyon is a must see if you are in the Whitecourt area. Hard Luck Canyon is a waterfall fed by a beaver pond when it overflows so it is best to view in spring or after a lot of rain. The Waterfall falls from the cliff side under the bridge and into the Canyon to meet Hard Luck Creek. This place is beautiful and the kids love it.

The walk from the parking lot is less than 1 Km round trip and is easy for any skill level and even stroller or wagon friendly. Keep in mind that once you reach the bridge that overlooks the canyon there is several stairs to access the canyon floor and the last set being quite steep. So some may want to just stay at the top and view the canyon from above.

The Sandstone cliffs surround the creek bed which makes this a spectacular geological feature that is a must visit on our list. Green moss covers the rocks in areas around the Canyon and a massive Poplar tree stands above the canyon.

When in Whitecourt take Govenlock Rd \ Range Road 122 there are several signs blue saying Hard Luck Canyon. Turn right on Twp Rd 591 and follow until you reach the parking lot for Hard Luck Canyon. Please Note that the last  section of road is gravel.

As you walk the trail there are several interpretive signs and explaining how the canyon formed over the last 11 000 years. The forest surrounds you and all you hear is birds chirping and water trickling. What a fantastic place to relax and just enjoy nature.
