Winter Activities in Edmonton | January 2023

We are in the deep dark frigid days of winter now and have officially had snow on the ground for over 65 days; Winter Solstice has passed by and even know the days are starting to get longer by the minutes you can feel the difference and we are feeling that pull towards spring.

We can’t help but pull out those map books and start planning our Summer Adventures for the months ahead. We were gifted The Ultimate Alberta Bucket List Book for Christmas and it reminded us that adventure doesn’t only have to be in the Summer Months.  However Some of our best adventures have been in the cold winter month’s just check some of these out!!!

Elk Island National Park Bison Watch!

Elk Island National Park is Canada's largest fully fenced National Park and is a great spot to see bison especially in the Winter Months. Just a short drive east of Edmonton Alberta this park has so much to offer. Go for a short hike, skate on the frozen lake, toboggan down the hill located by Astotin Lake, let the kids play on the playground and spot some Bison!

Skating on one of many outdoor Ice rinks!

One of our favorite winter activities is Ice Skating. If you don't own a pair you can rent from several locations around the City. We use Totem Outfitters located in Edmonton and buy used and trade in when we need a new set for the kids. There are several local ice rinks along with designated skating ponds. Also if outside is not your thing and you enjoy inside check out the Public Skating times at your local skating rink or rec Centre.

Fires and Marshmallow Roasts!

This one is simple, grab a bag of marshmallows and enjoy the great outdoors. If you do not have access to a fire pit the city of Edmonton has some great spots  that you can access to have a small fire.

Tobogganing!

Several great hills for all skill levels in the City of Edmonton and in the surrounding communities. We built a small ice slide in our backyard for some at home fun.

Winter Festivals!

Edmonton is known as the Festival City. We took a drive around just to see some of the sights and Instagramable spots our city has to offer. December is obviously loaded with Christmas activates everywhere but so are the other months. Enjoy Snow Way Out in the Ice District, Ice on Whyte, Deep Freeze Festival, Flying Canoe Volant, The Annual Polar Plunge, Silver Skate Festival and so many more!

Check out Wintercityedmonton.ca for more details.

Winter Road Trips!

You can take a road trip in any direction from the City of Edmonton and you will find something interesting along the way. We Check out Rochfort Tressle Bridge only a couple hours North of Edmonton and an epic toboggan hill as well.

Winter Cold Experiments & Northern Lights Viewing!

Board? Us too! We decided to try out the Mpheba effect with all this cold and also did some Northern Lights Viewing. You can see the Northern Lights all year around however because of the longer nights in the winter months your chances are a lot higher unless you are a night owl.
